The solar behind them, Nicolaa and Father Timothy entered the hall.

At sight of her, Blanche and Ulrich broke apart somewhat guiltily,

which caused Isabel to smile and shake her head. Nicolaa could see

no cause for amusement. Better for all concerned if Blanche stayed in

the safety of the solar.

Isabel stood in front of Rowland, Richard and William cast about him

like casually thrown dice. Her head back and her manner ardent,

Isabel spoke to Rowland. He looked down at her, his manner somber,

and nodded. In agreement? In understanding? The distance was too

great to discern. Richard spoke sharply to his wife, a rebuke of sorts,

which she answered quickly. Then she smiled, a blinding grin that

drew an unwilling smile from her serious husband.

Rowland looked at her then, his own countenance serious, his eyes

scanning the hall. The ladies were all about him: Blanche with her

amorous squire in a corner, Ermengarde at the fire, Agnes at the

doorway to the stair, Jeanne in a chair by the fire, Perette and Beatrice

edging closer to Edmund, who stood behind his lord, Richard. On

Rowland's face was a strange look, full of intensity and purpose. It

was never well when a man had such a look. It meant he had decided

something, and what a man decided to do was usually troublesome

for a woman. What was his intent?

She would find out. It was time for the midday meal, the largest of the

day. It was a lengthy meal, and she sat next to her husband, with

William seated on Rowland's right. She would have more than

enough time to determine what thoughts lurked behind her husband's

dark eyes.

The blessing was spoken, the bread broken, and then she spoke.

"What was it you wanted to discuss with me?"
